Wind Farm Research

Jose Lebron’s design and drawing classes worked on a long-term project that studies the interaction between wind farms and both nature and man-made features, using the city of Albany as a model. The students designed and built a scaled-down model of a city (Albany) and a wind farm and placed them inside of a wind tunnel. Students gathered information of the city from the internet, designed 3-D models of features using Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, built models using 3-D printing and tested different wind turbine arrangements in a wind tunnel facility at RPI. Before this project could be tackled, the students first needed to learn about lift and drag. They ran around an “airfoil” to learn about the effects of lift and drag on wind turbines.
