Biosketch
Robert L. Spilker received his undergraduate training in the Department
of Aeronautics, University of Illinois, B.S. 1971, and his graduate
training in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, M.S. 1972, Sc.D. 1974. After
spending two years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Aeroelastic
and Structures Research Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, Professor Spilker joined the faculty of the Department
of Civil Engineering, Mechanics, and Metallurgy at the University
of Illinois at Chicago in 1976. In 1984, he joined the faculty of
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as Professor of Computational Mechanics,
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and
Mechanics, and was Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department
from 1994 - 2004. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering,
where he has served as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Bioengineering
Division, the U. S. Association of Computational Mechanics, currently
on its Executive Committee, the Orthopedic Research Society, and
the American Society of Engineering Education. He serves as Past Chair
of the Executive Committee of the U. S. National Committee on Biomechanics,
and on the Editorial Advisory Board of several journals in the areas
of bioengineering and computational mechanics. Dr. Spilker is a
Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American
Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and the Biomedical Engineering Society.
