Stephen J. Rock

Dr. Stephen Rock is a Research Scientist in the NYS Center for Automation Technologies and Systems at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Union College in 1989, an M.S. in Computer & Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1991, and a Ph.D. in Computer & Systems Engineering from Rensselaer in 2000.

Steve has conducted research on interfacing CAD systems with Solid Freeform Fabrication processes. This involved work on 3D model validity checking, automated repair, topology based slicing, and creation of an improved file format for storing facet model data. He also developed a patented powder-based Rapid Prototyping process and implementation using an industrial robot and custom experimental hardware. Geometric distortions occurring at the interface between powders undergoing consolidation were modeled, and a shape optimization procedure was developed that successfully predicted process compensated geometry required for this new process. Modeling and shape optimization research was funded by a DOE Integrated Manufacturing and Processing pre-doctoral fellowship. Recent activities have focused on manufacturing process development in the fuel cell industry, design and build of a laser processing test-bed, and creation of a control system for improved engine pre-heating energy management.

Steve has worked for IBM using digital logic emulation technologies (electrical rapid prototyping), and he has consulted for several companies, including Philips and DTM Corp. (Desk Top Manufacturing), on a range of issues from process software development to industrial automation and control. He has gained substantial experience and business perspective as a principle in a venture that developed and manufactured a nationally marketed, mass customized product. Steve participated in all facets of the operation from equipment installation and bring-up through developing proprietary data-driven design automation tools. His current research interests include information driven manufacturing process development, CAD/CAM, rapid prototyping and rapid tooling, embedded systems, automation and robotics, and alternative energy technologies.
