Introduction

From the mid-1990s on, the rapid infusion of information and communication technologies in product development (PD) has significantly enhanced the importance of IT for product development managers and practitioners. IT-enabled product development now has the potential to radically redefine the processes and outcomes of PD. However, as is evident from prior research on IT management, effective deployment of IT resources for PD calls for the careful consideration of the complex interplay between the IT application and the product development context. Managers will need to understand how IT shapes the PD processes and their outcomes, the development and management of the PD team (including the norms, values, and the relational ties), the knowledge flows and the knowledge acquisition/creation strategies, the project management models, and the linkages of PD with other organizational functions/objectives.

In the last few years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of empirical studies focused on IT and product development. While these recent studies have offered several important insights on the selection, the use, and the impact of IT in product development, they have also indicated the critical need to develop a more comprehensive and coherent understanding of how IT resources can be deployed and managed in the PD context.

Overall objective

This book will provide a platform for researchers from diverse disciplinary areas – including information systems, marketing, operations, strategy, and organizational behavior – to build on and develop new theoretical concepts and insights on the application of IT in product development. The main objective of the book is to contribute towards the development of an integrative theoretical framework that could inform on (a) the role and the business value of IT in product development, and (b) the organizational and managerial issues that underlie successful deployment of IT in PD. The book will also set out an agenda for future research – by bringing more clarity to the “what” (key research questions) and the “how” (relevant theoretical perspectives) – in the broad area of IT and product development.

SUBMISSIONS

Researchers are invited to submit a 2-page chapter proposal. The proposal should clearly describe the main focus and the objective of the proposed chapter and the key theoretical contributions. Full chapters are due from the authors by April 30, 2008. All submitted chapters will undergo a review. The book will be published in early 2009 by Springer as part of its Annals of Information Systems (AoIS) series.

Please e-mail all inquiries and proposal submissions to nambis@rpi.edu
