Consulting & Advising

Much of my current consulting and advising work relates to my ongoing research in two areas. I consult with companies on Network-Centric Innovation or external innovation sourcing strategies – in this area, my consulting work draws on my new book The Global Brain (Wharton School Publishing, 2007) as well as on articles that have been published in the Harvard Business Review and the MIT Sloan Management Review.

I also consult on Customer Co-innovation and on the use of information-technology (IT) based tools that enhance the success of product development activities. A representative list of my corporate clients includes: Microsoft, 3M, P&G, Singapore Telecom, SAP, and IBM.

Here are four broad issues that I have recently worked on for my corporate clients

·         Identify and evaluate Network-Centric Innovation opportunities (i.e. collaboration with external innovation networks) vis-ŕ-vis a company’s innovation/growth objectives

·         Evaluate a company’s “Organizational Preparedness” for network-centric innovation (including product development processes, IP management processes, and relationship management capabilities)

·         Develop a coherent plan for Customer Co-innovation – including the design and implementation of Virtual Customer Environments that fit the company’s innovation goals

·         Evaluate and assist the adoption of IT-based tools for product development (including PLM tools)

Executive Lectures & Workshops

I also offer executive lectures and workshops on a range of topics related to my research in innovation management, technology strategy, and product development. Each lecture is customized to fit the particular corporate audience and their circumstances. I employ a range of proven and effective adult learning tools including case discussions, simulations, interactive exercises, small group exercises, and team presentation.

Some of the topics that have been regularly requested by my corporate clients are:

·         Driving Organic Growth through Network-Centric Innovation Initiatives

·         Partnering with an Innovation Capitalist: Reaching Out and Reaching In

·         Devising a Balanced External Innovation Sourcing Strategy

·         Virtual Customer Environments & Customer Co-Innovation: What, How, Why?

·         Profiting from Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Tools

·         Deploying IT Tools for New Product Development

·         Why Service Businesses are not Product Businesses
