KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Winging it – Developing New Metrics and Methods
for Re-shaping Future Aircraft |
Ballroom
A-B |
| Terry A. Weisshaar,
Program Manager, DARPA – Defense Sciences Office ---- Keynote
Abstract: Morphing aircraft change shape drastically, in the
air, on the fly, to allow them to adapt to radical changes in
advanced mission environments, such as changing from a loitering
airplane to an attacking airplane. Unfortunately, the metrics
used to create effective morphing designs – actuator effectiveness
and energy input, mechanism weight and topology and materials
selection – are not commonly used by today’s MDO methodology.
This talk describes DARPA’s morphing aircraft program, the component
technologies involved in morphing aircraft design and how success
is measured. The presentation will suggest how the MDO community
can respond to the challenges of this type of aircraft design
to provide rapid knowledge generation. |

PANEL: Resolving Tradeoffs in MDO: Performance, Cost, and DFX
|
Pearl
Street Room |
| Panel explores
the implications of various tradeoff-resolving approaches and
highlights the mathematical and non-mathematical arguments involved
in tradeoff resolution. Much of engineering design and MDO comes
down to resolving tradeoffs between competing objectives. Two
approaches have been embraced by the engineering design community:
On the one hand multiobjective optimization seeks to identify
Pareto-optimal, non-dominated solutions from which a final design
can be chosen. In this approach preferences are expressed after
optimization has converged. Utility-based or decision-based
design (DBD) on the other hand combines various objectives into
a scalar, dimensionless utility that reflects the "goodness"
of a particular solution. In this approach preferences are generally
expressed before optimization begins. The panel will explore
the implications of each approach and highlight the mathematical
and non-mathematical arguments involved in tradeoff resolution.
Examples of tradeoffs in modern system design such as design
for performance, cost, robustness, noise and emissions reduction,
manufacturability, flexibility and evolvability will be discussed. |
