Student Paper Competition

Undergraduate (BS) and graduate students (MS or PhD) who are working in fields listed in the Call for Papers (be it multidisciplinary or not) are encouraged and invited to submit papers on design optimization. Co-authored papers (e.g., with advisors and other students) are welcomed. However, the first author must be a student, and the conference presentation should be made by a student author. It is assumed that the student has played a key role in the research and writing of the paper, and that he or she is a registered student at the time the final paper is submitted. Student authors of the top undergraduate and graduate papers will be presented an award from the MDO Technical Committee at the conference. Papers and accompanying poster presentations are judged on the originality of the work, the paper's potential importance to the field, and on its clarity.

Instructions for participating in the student paper competition:

1. Submit your abstract via the normal AIAA abstract submission process (see submission instructions). Your abstract will undergo the normal review process and, if accepted, will be assigned to a technical session along with all other accepted abstracts.

2. Before the abstract submission deadline (see Important Dates), contact via e-mail the Chair of the Student Paper Competition, Prof. Wei Chen, and indicate that your paper is to be considered for the Student Paper Competition. Provide the title and authorship of the paper, and the AIAA provided tracking number in the correspondence. You will receive an e-mail confirming your intent from Prof. Chen.

3. Submit your final paper to the AIAA website by April 26, 2004. Note that this early deadline is to allow the evaluation committee sufficient time to review the candidate papers before the conference.

4. An oral component of the paper will also be judged. A poster session is arranged for the first day of the conference. The top papers in the undergraduate and graduate categories will be invited to participate in this poster session. If you are selected as a finalist, you will need to prepare a poster and a five minute presentation summarizing your paper. Available poster sizes are 4' x 3' or 3' x 4'.
