The NYC trip was a huge success! Here is what some RBSA members had to say about it:
 

“Great and enjoyable trip.  There should be more of such kind of trips.”

“I really like the field trip; I think recruiters were impressed by the sheer fact that we came all the way from RPI.  Are there any more job fairs with more companies, especially those looking for interns and/or co-ops?  I was really coming to find a co-op, but most companies weren’t looking for one.”

“I like seeing different companies being together and speaking with them and learning the needs of industry.”

“The trip was very fine… Maybe next time we could have a real job fair, with more companies.”

Careers in Biotechnology

Lunch will be provided. A panel of professionals in the biotechnology industry (all alumni) will visit campus  to offer career perspectives/guidance, address technology changes in the biotechnology industry and answer questions from students. This event is co-sponsored by the CDC (week of Spring Fling) and the Biomedical Engineering Department. Lunch provided.

PAST

The RBSA took a few students on a trip to the New York Biotechnology Association Annual Meeting on March 19th in NYC.  This trip to the conference was sponsored by the alumni relations office and the RPI administration (RPI is now a member of the NYBA). Some comments from the students are given below: 

• Thank you very much to enable me and other students from the RBSA to go to the NYBA conference. I had enjoyable and educating experience. The organization of the whole conference and the presentations were very good. I heard and learned many new things. The day was long and busy, but I still feel that I could see so much more. The lunch was good too :)
  
• I really enjoyed the rich content of the panel discussions. In particular, I enjoyed learning what factors the institutional investors look for when performing valuations, and the different methodologies that they use. Also it was great to see what the industry leaders consider cutting edge research. In all cases, the diversity and horsepower of the panel members led me to new and unexpected insights.
  
• Thank you for sending me to the NYBA conference. As an undergraduate student I really learned a lot more about what is going in the biotechnology industry. The conference provided me with the opportunity to really see the opportunities available in biotechnology. Also, I particularly enjoyed the presentation done by IBM. It showed more of the bioinformatics side of things, which is what I am interested in. Once again, thank you for the great opportunity.
  
• I learned more about the biotechnology field and some of the huge problems found within the industry, such as data management from clinical trials. I got the rare experience to attend such a conference as an undergraduate, which gave me insight into the biotech field that I otherwise might not have gotten.
  
• Please pass along my thanks to everyone who helped in putting together our trip to the NYBA conference in New York last week. The information sessions were very helpful. I was particularly excited about the valuation information that was presented during the "Valuing R&D Portfolios" session. Apart from the sessions, the conference also gave me the opportunity to meet several important and interesting people in the biotech field. Overall the conference was a great experience. Thanks.
  
• I found the NYBA seminar in NYC very valuable on many levels. Not only were the panel discussions insightful and useful but the overall experience really lends itself to the better understanding and promotion of biotechnology. As a MBA student I found the seminar an excellent way to network of people in the biotech community.
  
• I thought that the conference was very well organized, provided an enormous amount of information on various areas of biotechnology, everyone was friendly, the location and catering service were wonderful. There were wonderful networking opportunities, a good variety of panel discussions, and i was very impressed by the stature of all those in attendance. Basically I was very honored to be a part of such a wonderful event.

PAST:

On March 6th a group of students (undergrad and grad) went on a site visit to Albany Molecular Research. After a very informative presentation on drug discovery and chemistry, we toured the high-security premises and laboratories. More site visits are planned for the Fall.   Pictures from the visit are shown below:
