9/28 Written assignments: they should be submitted in both hard copy and electronic forms. I request PDF format for the electronic submissions. The file name should be of the form first_author_last_name_paper1.pdf  (for example mccaffrey_paper1.pdf). Email them to mccafr@rpi.edu by the submission date/time. Hard copies can be placed in my mailbox (in 1W19 Science Center), handed in class, or under my door (2C01Science Center) if I am not in. The electronic copy is the ‘official’ version and should be submitted on time.

An overview of natural disasters focusing on earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, landslides, avalanches, sinkholes, meteorites, weather, and river flooding. The course will consist of lectures on the various phenomena and case studies. Discussion will focus on how and why natural disasters occur and how we interact with our environment to make them less or more destructive. Students will be required to write short essays on each of approximately six to ten topics and mid-term and final exams will be given (4 credit hours).
