The monastery, or convent, of Kecharis is located in the town of Tsaghkadzorin the region of Hrazdan, about 57 km northeast of Erevan (approx. coord.40-33 / 44-42). It is believed to have been built between the 11th and the 13th centuries. The monastery complex consists of three churches, a gavit, two small ruined chapels and a fourth church, S. Harut'iun, which is located to the west outside the monastery walls near the old cemetery.

The first construction on the monastery grounds was the domed hall church of S. Grigor Lusavoritch. It is said to have been built during the first half of the 11th century by Grigor Magistros the son of Vasak Pahlawuni. The domed church of S. Nshan, located directly north of the Kat'oghike, was also built at the beginning of the 11th century. The Kat'oghike was built during the 12th and 13th centuries by the architect Vetsik. The church of S. Harut'iun, located outside the monastery walls near the site of the old cemetery, is a domed basilica on the interior, and is rectangular on the exterior. It was probably built in 1220 AD to serve as a funerary monument for the family of Prince Grigor Magistros.
