the business-like description of the demo:
This Web application is an example of how the NearMe Intellocate API can be used to integrate Location Based Services and content into any web or wireless application. Intellocate is built upon and extends MapInfo's Industry leading tools for Geocoding, Driving Directions and Mapping, providing access in a hosted fashion.
Intellocate combines access to geocoding (street, city, phone number, Airport code, etc...), landmark enhanced driving directions, reverse geocoding and content searches (find me a plumber within 5 miles of my address) under the umbrella of a single easy to use API. Learn more about Intellocate at NearMe's website.
Ok, this sucker was a MONSTER and it changes every day. The great difficulty working on this project is that with 5 java developers just cranking away on new features
24/7 and throwing them in before i even know about them, it's hard to keep the interface coherent. When i arrived on the scene, the app was a complete disaster, so at
least now it has some form of order above what was previously there. It's a really complex and cool system, despite the drawbacks of trying to design for something
this big with developers who have never had any process with an interface designer. Its got really cool search capabilites all set by your location, a full preference
system, you can comment on listings, you can have a favourites page, etc etc. All in all it's really quite useful.
In June of 2001 Nearme was asorbed by san diego wireless company Mforma. Nearme.com went offline in mid-2002.
