UNYSAG Meeting, Thursday, May 28, 1998

The second meeting of the Upstate New York Systems Administrators Guild is scheduled for Thursday, 28 May from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in room 4034 in the Center for Industrial Innovation (CII) located on the RPI campus in Troy. Light refreshment will be provided.

The first meeting went well, and the attendies all thought it would be a good idea to have another one. We are already seeing benefits from UNYSAG, Deanne from Skidmore told us about another group starting (which we have contacted) and about a seminar on securing networks (which was attended by a number of folks from my group and we found it quite interesting and usefull - Thanks Deanne!)

Agenda

At the first meeting, we decided to defer organizational issues to the next meeting, so once again, we have organizational issues on the agenda. I am still looking for additional topics and suggestions for the agenda. Personally, I am looking for someone who can speak with authority and safe and secure ways to remotely access NT servers. Other presentation topics could include "How to conduct an information security audit", or other security/privacy issues. We could also get into more technical areas like enterprise wide printing (with accounting and billing). Ideally we can expand this agenda based on comments from people prior to the meeting (email them to me at finkej@rpi.edu).

We will also have a presentation from Kathy Bursese, the Assistant Director of Service Support Services at RPI on RPI's new "Electronic Citizenship" policy which outlines what we expect from our users, and what obligations we have to them (in terms of use and abuse of the network.) While this will definatly be of interest to the academic sites, I would bet that other sites will also get some good info.

Travel & Parking

The CII is located on the RPI campus directly across the pedistrian bridge from the Visitors Information Center and Visitors Parking Lot. Room 4034 is located in the lower part of the CII (North). After you cross the pedestrian bridge, the CII will be directly ahead of you (large white building, with a smaller section attached via a walkway) to the right. Go into the smaller section under the walkway, and go up one flight. (If you happen to go into the larger section, go to the 4th floor and take the walkway over to smaller part of the building - note: from the pedestrian bridge, you enter the CII on the third floor.)

You can find directions to RPI at http://www.rpi.edu/CampusInfo/travel.html. Parking is available on 15th street, or in the Visitors parking lot. There are hourly charges for the visitors parking lot. You may want to avoid parking on campus - most campus spots require a parking permit. There are a few metered spots, but they are generally pretty short term. Parking enforcement is rather agressive, with a majority of the parking office revenue coming from fines rather than permits. More information about the wonderful and wacky world of parking at RPI can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/parking.
