Unit 1—Intro to Web Writing, Remediation, and the Rhetoric of Representation
Objectives:
- Understand the difference between “web” writing and other kinds of writing (strengths, limitations, and new possibilities). You should be able to identify, analyze, and discuss different writing spaces as explained by Bolter.
- Understand and implement basic web design components (see Non-Designer’s Web Book) including but not limited to basic HTML hand-coding in compliance with W3 standards. You should be able to create and link to images and image maps, as well as make hyperlinks by this unit’s end.
- Develop basic rhetorical fluency— you should be able to identify and apply basic rhetorical concepts—audience, ethos, logos, pathos— and design concepts (alignment, proximity, repetition, contrast, accessibility).
- Be able to evaluate websites based on their rhetorical purpose, function, audience, and design.
- Learn about writing process through the writing and revising of your prose.

Unit 2: Collaboration, Intellectual Property, and CSS
Objectives:
- Experiment with, participate in, and understand the differences among a variety of web writing genres and tools (wikis, blogs, commercial, educational, chat, community, “social software,” etc).
- Hone your knowledge of wikis, understanding of the intellectual history of the Internet, and increase your collaborative skills by participating in at least two wikis (class wiki, Wikipedia)
- Develop and demonstrate your expertise in a particular subject area of your choosing by conducting original research.
- Be able to evaluate and incorporate outside resources in a web writing space to strengthen your ethos as an author.
- Be able to document and include outside sources with appropriate contextualization.
- Learn proper citation strategies for traditional and multimedia writing spaces.
- Learn basic CSS coding and skills through your use of the wiki.
- Increase your ability to write clear, concise, content-specific prose crafted for a public audience.
- Publish a contribution to Wikipedia.

Objectives:
- Work successfully as a collaborative design team.
- Identify and assess the audience of a site or potential site.
- Identify and assess the needs and purpose of a site or potential site.
- Conduct research to find out more about audience and designer needs. You may accomplish this task through interviews, e-mails, online chat, telephone calls, etc.
- Produce a cleanly designed website or redesign tailored to designer and user needs.
- Each group member is responsible for at least three web pages (or screens) organized in an easy to navigate fashion.
