Voya Nui
Voya Nui

Located far to the south of Mata Nui, this small island hides one of the most important objects in the Bionicle universe: the Mask of Life. The presence of this powerful mask has made Voya Nui the setting for perhaps the most exciting chapter of the Bionicle story.

History

Voya Nui was once part of the mysterious underground Bionicle mainland. About a thousand years ago, it was broken off by the same earthquake that struck Metru Nui, and floated to the surface. Many of the inhabitants, including their Turaga, perished in the cataclysm. More recently, a large portion of the island's center sunk into the ocean, creating the island's horseshoe shape and carrying one of the Matoran villages with it. The remaining Matoran were determined to remain on Voya Nui in memory of their friends who had died. Despite the harsh conditions, they managed to survive- until the arrival of the Piraka changed their lives forever.

Geography

The island of Voya Nui is rugged and desolate. Its rocky coasts are surrounded by a ring of ice and the tempestuous southern ocean. Most of the island is stony wasteland, with some scrub for Rahi to eat. The supply of fresh water is limited. However, a belt of forest exists around the coast, seemingly growing out of the rock with nothing to sustain it. The Matoran fear this unnatural forest and avoid entering it. Mount Valmai, an active volcano, is located in the center of the island. Powerful thunderstorms are frequent, sometimes lasting for days. Voya Nui deserves its nickname, "the daggers of Death."

The landscape of Voya Nui has been slightly altered by the Matoran, who built a village and protected it with a high wall. Recently, the Piraka constructed a stronghold for themselves near the center of the island. There are also ten or twelve Piraka outposts on the island, manned by mechanical constructions known as Nektann.

Inhabitants

There are several species of Rahi on Voya Nui, most of them dangerous. Herds of Kikanalo can be found there, and a few Visorak as well. There is only one Matoran village on Voya Nui, with a population of several hundred. In addition, several mysterious beings have made their home on this island for centuries.

Jovan

Jovan was one of the historical figures who affected Voya Nui. When he first arrived, five thousand years before the Toa Nuva, he was a Toa of Magnetism, and Voya Nui was still connected to the underground mainland. Jovan was part of the first Toa team to recover the Mask of Life from its hiding place. When the team saw the mask's power and danger, they returned it to the lava chamber rather than risk using it. Jovan became a Turaga and remained nearby to watch over the Matoran. He was killed in the earthquake that made Voya Nui an island.
