(mixed sugars from hydrolysis of hemicellulose even cheaper but fermentability is questionable)

Pretreatment:

Milling by dry ball milling or wet milling requires massive and expensive equipment.

Explosion with steam or ammonia is highly effective in promoting enzymatic hydrolysis. Damages hemicellulose.

Several other approaches show promise.
