Security

Our campus is generally a safe place. The Office of Public Safety is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for you on the campus and in Rensselaer housing. In the event of an emergency at any hour, call 276-6611. It is important, however, to remember the following:

On Campus

Call the Rensselaer Public Safety Office (276-6611) immediately about any trouble, even if you only suspect a crime.

Except in extreme emergency or fire, you should call the Rensselaer Public Safety Office before calling the Troy Police or Fire Department.

You should carry your Rensselaer student identification card (ID) with you at all times. We recommend that your dependents apply for dependent identification cards in Visitor Information Center (VIC). A Public Safety Officer may ask you to show him/her your ID, particularly at night.

Our campus safety officers are not policemen. Their job is to help you. Sometimes there is a misunderstanding between an international student and an officer. If you have any problems or complaints, report them to the International Office or the Director of Public Safety.

If you live in Rensselaer housing, when a fire alarm sounds (even if you know it to be a false alarm), leave the building immediately. Public Safety Officers will instruct you when it is safe to return.

Emergency telephones or call boxes are located in all residential and academic areas for your convenience and safety. These phones are marked with a blue light on top to make them easy to find.

Off Campus

In an emergency, dial 911, or contact the Troy Police or the Fire Department directly. If you are confused or experience a problem, feel free to call the Rensselaer Public Safety Office.

We recommend that you not walk alone at night in isolated or poorly lighted parts of the campus, or in the city of Troy. This is especially true for women. Troy really is a safe place but our advice is "Better safe than sorry."
