Guidelines for Mailing Letters and Packages

Letters can be mailed at post offices and mailboxes (both from a public mailbox or from your home mailbox). When mailing a letter at a mailbox be sure to affix the proper postage (stamps). Packages need to be mailed from a post office.

Rates vary according to:

* The destination of the letter or package
* Type of services requested (example-1st class vs. 4th class mail)
* The weight of the item being mailed.
For information on current rates for domestic and international mail consult the personnel at the post office.

An inexpensive way to mail letters to other countries is by using aerogrammes. These can be bought at the post office and usually cost less than mailing a regular letter overseas.

Domestic first class mail in the US usually takes two to four days to reach its destination. If you are sending important documents by mail, you should send them Certified if in the US, or Registered if sending them abroad. International mail services vary, depending on the country to which the letter is going. It is advisable to inquire about these services directly at the post office.

Mail Delivery

Mail is delivered Monday through Saturday (except federal holidays) to your mailbox by the US Postal Services once a day.

Change of Address

When you move from one address to another be sure to notify the Troy Post Office (downtown) of the change. They will forward to your new address any first class mail that comes to your old address for a period of one year.

One useful resource is the Mover's Guide, a package available free of charge at any post office. This lists instructions on how to inform the post office of your move and how to ensure continuous delivery of mail at your new address. The same package includes change of address cards that can be sent to magazine publishers, friends, and relatives, notifying them of your new address.
