Diversity Visa Lottery 2003

The U.S. State Department has announced the 2003 Diversity Visa Lottery. The mail-in period for this Visa lottery will between October 1, 2001 and noon on October 31, 2001. To view the U.S. State Department Announcement go to: http://travel.state.gov/visa_lottery.html. The detailed instructions for the Diversity Visa Lottery can be viewed on the web at: http://travel.state.gov/visainstructions.html. DO NOT PAY anyone to help you with this. DON'T believe anyone who says they can give you a better chance if you PAY them to help you fill out the form. IT IS NOT TRUE.

Traveling

People are asking me if they will be able to get a visa stamp in their passports if they travel this winter. Right now the answer is YES. There was talk about a Moratorium on Foreign Student visas. Senator D. Fienstein started this, but as of today it has NOT happened. If you want to view the complete description of Senator's Feinstein original proposal go to: http://www.senate.gov/~feinstein/releases01stvisas1.htm. But on October 5, Senator Feinstein stated that the moratorium she has proposed would not be needed if educators worked with INS to better monitor international students. If you are traveling in the United States you should carry your passport, I-20 or DS-2019 and I-94 with you. At this time I have no new information about traveling. If we get any important information I will put it on my homepage.

What to do this Weekend

We are in the middle of Peak Fall Foliage. Take a drive and enjoy the scenery. Do you like scary things? October 12-14, 19-21, and 26-28 is the Fright Fest at the Great Escape in Lake George, New York. There will be scary shows, rides, and special scary events. The cost is $32.99 for adults and $16.50 for children under 48 inches tall. To find out when the shows start, call 792-3500. To get there take Interstate - 87 north and get off at exit 20. Turn right at the light. The Great Escape will be on your left a couple of miles down the road. Parking will be on the right. My daughter has gone to this and said it was a lot of fun. Dress warm, it gets cold when the sun goes down.

Interviewing tips

When speaking to the interviewer use his/her title and last name from time to time as you speak. If you are not sure what this means come in and ask. Never use the interviewer's first name unless he/she has specifically requested you to do so.

What to Wear

Have you started thinking about your winter coat, hat, gloves and boots? Start looking now, you will find a large selection to choose from and will be prepared when the cold weather arrives. Check the newspaper advertisements for sales. Stores have sales around holidays. This week you might find some "Columbus Day" sales. November 11 is "Veterans Day"; stores will have big sales then also.

Driving Tip

If you want an American drivers license and you do not have a social security number you must go to the Social Security Office in Troy first. They will give you a letter from them stating you are not eligible for a social security number. You then take that letter to the motor vehicle office.

American Slang

"Jock"

Jock - refers to a person who is involved in athletics. Ex: He is a jock. This means he is involved in sports and it is extremely important to him.
