Lally School Conference Gathers Experts on Science and Technology in China

Government representatives, businesspeople, and top researchers in the areas of science and technology, management, public policy, education, and research and development in China shared their insights on the country’s role as a modern technology leader at a conference sponsored by Rensselaer’s Lally School Sept. 4 through 6.

The meeting, titled “China’s Emerging Technological Trajectory in the 21st Century,” featured such prominent experts as Jin Xiaoming, minister-counselor of Science & Technology for the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China; Fang Xin, professor with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Policy and Management; and Denis Fred Simon, dean of the Lally School, among others.

The event took place at the Rensselaerville Institute Conference Center in Rensselaerville, N.Y.

“This gathering of international thought leaders really shed some light on China’s influence on business and innovation in today’s global economy,” said Simon. “The conference highlighted China’s contributions in the areas of science and technology, and assessed its vital role in the coming years.”

On Sept. 6, Simon — along with Xiaoming of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China — offered up his own expertise in a panel discussion of China’s international science and technology relations. Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson followed Simon with a lunchtime talk titled “Developments in International S&T: China’s Role and Impact.”

Other topics covered at the conference include: telecommunications, technology, and China’s modernization; the role of universities in China’s science and technology development; and brain drain/brain gain and China’s high-level human resources problems.
