Joseph Flaherty, dean of the School of Science, received the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics Computational and Applied Science Award, at the U.S. National Congress of Computational Mechanics in Albuquerque. 9/2/03

William Luddy Jr., professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, was named chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Science and Technology’s E-commerce Division and vice chair of its International Policy Coordinating Committee, at the annual meeting of the ABA held in San Francisco in August. The ABA’s Section of Science and Technology focuses on a wide range of technological and scientific research issues that intersect with U.S. and international law. Its E-commerce Division examines a wide range of issues that include information security, e-privacy law, development of technical standards in e-commerce, and electronic payment systems. 9/2/03

Mark Nelson, assistant professor of management, has been named a fellow of the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) for the 2003-2004 term. ECAR, located in Boulder, Colo., promotes the creation and exchange of research related to the management, use, socialization, and impact of information technology in higher education. 9/2/03

Donald Siegel, professor and chair of economics, was named to the academic advisory board of the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies, an independent, nonprofit think tank designed to promote practical ways to foster competition in Israel and the Middle East. 9/2/03

Denis Simon, dean of the Lally School of Management and Technology, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Foundation. He is one of four U.S. representatives. The foundation implements policies and programs to help foster collaboration in science and technology between American and Israeli industry. Its efforts are currently focused on biotechnology, information technology, harmonization of standards/regulations, homeland security, and nanotechnology. 9/2/03

Rensselaer and the Sage Colleges have been named co-recipients of the Van Rensselaer Corporate Award by the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce. They are being recognized for their homeownership programs, which provide incentives for buying homes in and around the two institutions in Troy. The homeownership program is part of Rensselaer’s “communiversity” efforts. The Van Rensselaer Awards Dinner is Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy. Daniel Berg, Institute Professor of Science and Technology and professor of decision sciences and engineering systems, will receive the IEEE Educational Activities Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education during the IEEE Board of Directors Meeting Series in Seattle Nov. 14. Berg is being honored for “a lifetime of contributions to the education of working professionals through leadership in the establishment and growth of innovative distance learning programs and through distinguished teaching in such programs." The award recognizes IEEE members for the dedicated contribution to the design, delivery, and support of continuing education courses and programs in the fields of interest to IEEE members. 8/11/03

Andrew Corbett, assistant professor of management in the Lally School of Management and Technology, has edited a book of Fast Company articles titled Strategy (Wiley, 2004). The collection contains over 30 real-world examples of strategic analysis, formulation, and implementation at work in the management process, as well as several instructional pieces, and pages of questions for readers. The publication aims to show strategy as a flexible “co-mingling of resources, functions, and capabilities from which true competitive advantage can be achieved,” and is meant to supplement MBA classroom instruction. 8/11/03

Roger Grice, clinical associate professor of language, literature, and communication, has received the President's Award from the Society for Technical Communication "for his outstanding mentorship of new members of the society; for his guidance of society leaders; and for his personal skill and leadership that have helped transform the society into the open, forward-looking community that it is today." 8/11/03

Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer, has been named an honorary member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). According to NSPE, “an individual who is not eligible for any NSPE membership category, but has made exceptional contributions to the engineering profession and NSPE is eligible for NSPE Honorary Membership.” 8/11/03

William Luddy Jr., professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford and a member of the U.S. Delegation to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), recently participated in the UNCITRAL Working Group on E-Commerce at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This group has been consulting on the development of a new international instrument that would enable electronic commercial transactions and examining ways in which many international treaties could be harmonized to enhance global e-commerce. UNCITRAL, established by the UN General Assembly in 1966, is the core legal body of the United Nations in the field of international trade law. Its mandate is to further the progressive harmonization and unification of the law of international trade. 8/11/03

James Watt, professor and chair of language, literature, and communication, has been re-appointed to a three-year term as external evaluator of the graduate program in New Media at the City University of Hong Kong. He will review the program annually and conduct one on-site visit during the three-year term. 8/11/03

The men’s lacrosse program has been honored by U.S. Lacrosse with the Jim Adams Sportsmanship Award. This honor is bestowed on a team that displays the best sportsmanship in collegiate lacrosse as voted on by the Lacrosse Officials Association. This is the first time that Rensselaer has received this honor. 8/11/03
