New Web Site Helps Students Find Off-Campus Housing

Rensselaer has developed an extensive Web site as part of its Neighborhood Renewal Initiative to help students more effectively find decent, affordable housing off campus.

Called "A Guide to Living Off Campus," the site developed by the Rensselaer Union lists available apartments and rooms in Troy and the surrounding area. It offers information on parking availability, students' rights and responsibilities as tenants, how to choose a neighborhood, and how to get involved in the local neighborhood associations.

"The main purpose for the site is so students can choose not just an apartment, but a neighborhood and a landlord they can count on to provide them with a good place to live."
Rick Hartt

The site, which was designed in part to help international students become better acquainted with their new surroundings, includes a fact sheet that answers everything from "What is a lease?" to what to look for to ensure the residence meets safety and security standards.

The Web site, still in its development stages, eventually will allow students to search for compatible roommates and second-hand furniture.

"The main purpose for the site is so students can choose not just an apartment, but a neighborhood and a landlord they can count on to provide them with a good place to live," says Rick Hartt '70, director of the Rensselaer Union.

About 2,900 full-time students-almost half of the undergraduate body and 95 percent of all graduate students-live off campus.
