Latino Heritage Month Activities
Planned Alianza Latina, a student organization devoted to
furthering Latino culture, will celebrate Latino Heritage Month (LHM)
with a series of activities on campus. Events include speakers and
social events. According to LHM co-chair Maria Rodriguez '03, "It
is time to commemorate women. We all have come from women and it is
time to celebrate all of them." Alianza Latina will kick off the month-long festivities with writer-speaker Linda Nieves Powell on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in Mother's Wine Emporium. Powell will perform her renowned monologue "Yo Soy Latina!" The monologue will discuss life as a Latina as well as tackle issues that Latinas face on a day-to-day basis. Alianza Latina will also be serving a traditional meal at the event, "in order to quench both the spiritual and physical hunger of the audience," according to organizers. Throughout the month, Alianza Latina, along with other
student organizations, will sponsor events open to the entire community.
"Participation of the RPI community is what makes the month,"
said Antonio Borges '05, Alianza Latina president and LHM co-chair. Other events include a party on Sept. 13 in the Rensselaer Union from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Alianza Latina's annual date auction on Sept. 20 (the proceeds from which will be donated to a local community charity); and on Oct. 2, poet-writer-activist Piri Tomas, author of Down These Main Streets required reading in New York City high schools--will perform some of his works. 9/9/02
Low Gallery Dedication Sept. 27 Rensselaer will celebrate the grand opening of the
George M. Low Gallery on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. All members of
the campus community are invited to attend. George Low '48, Rensselaer's 14th president, led the
Apollo Spacecraft Program that successfully landed man on the moon.
Low died in 1984. A collection of his space memorabilia, donated to
Rensselaer by his widow, Mary R Low, will be on permanent display
in the newly designed gallery. The George Low Gallery, formerly known
as the Low Lounge, is located in the Low Center for Industrial Innovation. A dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, Sept
27, at 5 p.m. in the RPI Playhouse. Gallery tours will immediately
follow the ceremony.
The Hirsch Observatory will be open for Public Observing
every Wednesday and Friday through the second week in December, weather
permitting. The Observatory will be open from sunset until three hours
after sunset, as long as the sky is mostly clear.
