Three Rensselaer students were among more than
125 undergraduate and graduate students from around the country
who spent the summer at NASA getting practical work experience and
contributing to the agency's aerospace research endeavors. Mark
Pesce '03, mathematics, Brian Brzek '04, aeronautical
and mechanical engineering, and Dennis Keyes '03, mathematics,
were selected for the highly competitive Langley Aerospace Research
Summer Scholars (LARSS) program at NASA's Langley Research Center
in Hampton, Va. "The LARSS Program is an intensive 10-week
summer research experience intended to encourage high-caliber college
students to both pursue and earn graduate degrees and to enhance
their interest in aerospace-related research by exposing them to
the professional resources and facilities at NASA Langley,"
said LARSS Director Heidi Davis. 9/9/02

Omar Al-Kofahi,
a graduate student in computer and systems engineering, received
the Presidential Student Award from the Microscopy Society of
America. The award recognizes outstanding student research in
the field of microscopy. 9/3/02

Steve Allard, assistant
baseball coach, has been selected as an AFLAC National Assistant
Coach of the Year as selected by AFLAC and Scholastic Coach
& Athletic Director magazine. Under Allard's tutelage,
Rensselaer's pitching staff has tied or set almost 40 school records
and four NCAA pitching records. Four hurlers have been selected
in the Major League Baseball Entry Draft and have gone on to play
professionally. Last season, Allard helped the Red Hawks to a
school record 33 wins and the team's second-ever Division III
World Series appearance. Allard was one of 524 high school and
college assistant coaches chosen among more than 300,000 candidates.
He is one of five college recipients from New York.
