Rensselaer undergrad Erin Crocker '03 outmaneuvered
her fellow drivers and picked up her third professional racing
victory of the season in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends,
family, and supporters at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y.
Aug. 23.
The senior industrial and management engineering
student sped to the lead in the sixth of the 20-lap race and remained
unchallenged for the rest of the competition. The win put Crocker,
who is seventh overall, only 61 points away from her goal of a
top-five ranking in the 76-driver Empire Super Sprints Series
(ESS), and widened the gap between her and her closest challenger
to almost 90 points.
"Erin Crocker is not only surviving,
she's succeeding in one of the toughest games there is in
short-track racing" said Robert Messler Jr. '65, a professor
in materials science and engineering and associate dean for
academic and student affairs in the School of Engineering.
A self-confessed racing addict, Messler wrote his own exciting
account of Crocker's pursuit of the checkered flag.

Currently, Crocker is the only female racer in
ESS and one of only a handful in professional auto racing.
