President
To Host Town Meeting
Campus members are urged to attend a Town Meeting hosted by President
Jackson on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 308 of
the Darrin Communications Center. Titled "State of the Institute:
Excellence in the First-Year Highest Priorities," the presentation
will include updates on plans for a new biotechnology and interdisciplinary
studies building and an electronic media and performing arts center.
Refreshments will be served. Those of you from off campus, or
those who cannot attend the event, are encouraged to watch the
live stream at http://asms.rpi.edu/townmeeting.

the events of this week and their effect on our campus community
and our city, we will postpone Saturday's Communiversity event
(Fall Fest) until another time.
Applicants
Sought for Associate Dean for Information Technology
Applications and nominations are being sought from all areas of
campus for the position of associate dean for information technology.
Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in an area of information
technology and must be capable of constructing and articulating
a broad vision of the future of IT at Rensselaer.
The
associate dean for information technology will lead and direct
the interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs
in information technology; coordinate activities with the dean
of science; chair the IT Oversight Committee; motivate and coordinate
interdisciplinary information technology research initiatives
in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Research;
convene the Information Technology Advisory Council and other
panels to review the program; and represent information technology
as an academic discipline at Rensselaer and to external groups.
The
successful candidate will devote one-half time during the academic
year and two months during the summer to the position. Letter
of intent and resume should be sent no later than Sept. 14 to
Dean Joseph Flaherty, 1C05 Science Center. The appointee will
assume duties on Oct. 15. 9/10/01
Planning Commission Seeks Public Comment on Construction
Postponed
due to national tragedy
The Troy
City Planning Commission has set Tuesday, Sept. 11, for a public
hearing on the Institute's Draft Environmental Impact Statement
(DEIS), which was submitted by Rensselaer to the city as part
of the State Environmental Quality Review. The public hearing
will be held at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The Planning Commission also
established a 39-day period for public comment beginning Aug.
17 and ending Sept. 24.
The
DEIS addresses environmental impacts that may result from Rensselaer's
proposed construction of the biotechnology
research center on
Fifteenth Street, the electronic media and performing arts center
on the hill above Eighth Street, a 500-car parking garage along
College Avenue, a boiler plant, an electrical substation, and
a chiller facility.
Members of
the Rensselaer community are encouraged to review the document
and present comments at the public hearing or in writing to the
Planning Department at City Hall. A copy is available for review
at the following places:

Call for Founders Award Nominations
Rensselaer's eighth annual Honors Convocation will be held Friday,
Nov. 2, at 4 p.m. The event honors outstanding students and faculty
for high academic achievements.
Nominations
are being accepted for the Founders Award of Excellence, the highest
honor of the convocation ceremony. Established in 1994, the Founders
Award honors students who embody qualities of creativity, discovery,
leadership, and the values of pride and responsibility at Rensselaer.
This year, up to 70 students from the Schools of Architecture,
Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Technology,
and Science-approximately one percent of the student population-will
be honored.

Mueller
Center Guest Policy
The Mueller Center has implemented its guest policy. Students may
have up to three free guest day passes per semester. After that,
there will be a $3 charge for student guest day passes. Faculty
and staff also may have up to three free guest day passes per semester.
After that, there is a $5 charge for a faculty/staff guest day pass.
Alumni
can visit the Mueller Center as guests twice before they will
need to join Let's Go Red and the Mueller Center for guest privileges.
Guest and day passes may be obtained at the Mueller Center front
desk. Passes will be dated and may only be used on the date for
which they are purchased. For more information, call ext. 6556.
