Rensselaer
Union Dedication
All members
of the campus community are invited to attend a celebration of the revitalization
of the Student Union on Saturday, Sept. 23, noon to 1:15 p.m. The event will
feature a formal program and ribbon cutting, music, tours, and barbecue luncheon.
The Rensselaer vs. Worcester Polytechnic football game will follow at 1:30
p.m. A post-game chowderfest at the Student Union will begin at 4 p.m.
The campus community also is invited to take part in two other events that
week:
Dedication of the George Rickey sculpture, titled: "Six Random Lines Excentric." Thursday, Sept. 21, at 5:15-6 p.m. in front of the Greene Building.
Barton Hall Dedication and BBQ luncheon. Friday, Sept. 22 at 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Barton Hall.

Transitions
Joseph Flaherty, Amos Eaton Professor of Computer Science and professor
of mathematical sciences, has been named acting chair of computer science.
He succeeds Frank Luk, who will begin a one-year sabbatical. A member of the
Rensselaer faculty since 1972, Flaherty was acting chair of the department
in 1984 and was chair in 1986. He also is a member of the faculty of information
technology.
Kenneth
Gertz has been named director of research, development, and administration,
in the office of the vice president of research, effective Aug. 1. A member
of the Rensselaer staff since 1988, Gertz previously served as director of
government and community relations. In his new position, Gertz will provide
support for the development of research sources and programs, and for the
administration and monitoring of ongoing research programs.
Cecile Mars '86 has been named director of environmental, health, and
safety. Mars, who earned her bachelor's in civil engineering at Rensselaer,
brings significant industrial experience to this newly created position, says
Jules Jacquin, senior director of risk management and internal auditing. Mars's
responsibilities involve designing, coordinating, and overseeing a comprehensive
environmental, health, and safety management system that addresses areas regulated
by the EPA and OSHA. Previously, Mars worked for Norton Company in Watervliet
as a health, safety, and training manager. 9/1/00
