Henry Ehrlich, professor emeritus, has accepted an invitation from Nicola Senesi of the University of Bari, Italy, to join as a member the subcommittee on "Biophysico-chemical processes in environmental systems" of Division VI of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Ehrlich contributed an invited chapter to a recent IUPAC publication (2002) titled "Interactions Between Soil Particles and Microorganisms," edited by P.M. Huang, Canada, J.-M. Bollag, and N. Wayne Gray, professor of cognitive science, was elected chair-elect of the Cognitive Science Society at the Society’s 25th Annual Conference held in Boston in August. The election carries a three-year commitment as chair-elect, chair, and past-chair. The Cognitive Science Society is the world's leading professional society for cognitive science. 10/13/03
Michael Halloran, emeritus professor of language, literature, and communications, was named a fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America. 10/13/03
Thiagarajan Ravichandran (“Ravi”), associate professor of management in Rensselaer’s Lally School, has been named associate editor of MIS Quarterly, an academic periodical based at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. A peer reviewed scholarly journal, MIS Quarterly publishes research “concerning both the management of information technology and the use of information technology for managerial and organizational purposes,” according to its Web site. Ravichandran also serves on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, a research-based, refereed journal in engineering management published by the IEEE Engineering Management Society. 10/13/03
Donald Siegel, professor and chair of economics, has been named to the Scientific Committee for the Applied Econometrics Association Conference on Innovation and Intellectual Property: Economic and Managerial Perspectives at INSEAD-Singapore in July 2004. 10/13/03
Rensselaer’s Student Chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) has won the Meritorious Achievement Award for 2003. The award was presented at the society’s annual meeting in Nashville Oct. 2. According to Natacha DePaola, associate professor of biomedical engineering and faculty adviser to the chapter, “Not only will our undergraduate representatives will be there to receive the award, be exposed to the scientific sessions, and interact with other student chapter representatives, we'll also have a good group of graduate students presenting their research work.” 10/13/03
Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer, was named to ESSENCE magazine’s “Top 50 Women Who Are Shaping Our World” list. The article states, “As president of one of the country’s leading research universities, this former chairwoman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is nurturing future generations of innovators and entrepreneurs. She’s also president-elect of the world’s largest general scientific society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science.” The article, in the October 2003 edition, says that the women listed are “leading corporations and advising presidents. They’re working to end poverty, injustice, and disease. They’re winning awards in Hollywood and on the global stage. They’re leaders, artists, visionaries, and peacemakers.” 9/29/03
Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon Roberts ’48 Chair in Solid State Electronics at Rensselaer, will take part in the Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Maryland Sept. 29. Shur will speak on solid-state lighting. 9/29/03
Minoru Tomozawa, professor of materials science and engineering, organized and hosted the 16th University Conference on Glass Science in Troy Aug. 13-15. Approximately 100 glass scientists and engineers from universities, research institutes, and industries from various parts of the world participated. R.H. Doremus, research professor of materials science and engineering, gave an invited talk, “Diffusion of Oxygen in Glass,” at the conference. 9/29/03
