Podowski Named Fellow of American Nuclear Society
Michael Podowski, professor of nuclear engineering
and engineering physics, has been elected a fellow of the American
Nuclear Society (ANS).
The
honor recognizes distinguished contributions in the field of nuclear
science and engineering, and is the highest membership grade offered
by the ANS. Fellows comprise a broadly based group of technical
and professional leaders who serve as advisers to the society.
"I'm happy because I've been involved in
ANS activities in various capacities and offices
for more than 20 years," said Podowski. "Being recognized
for my technical accomplishments is a great honor."
Podowski earned a master's degree in mathematics
from the University of Warsaw, and a master's, Ph.D., and Habilitation
(advanced Ph.D.) in nuclear engineering from Warsaw University
of Technology in Poland. He then served as assistant and associate
professor at Warsaw University of Technology, before moving to
the United States. In 1980 he began work at Rensselaer. Over the
years, he has served as a consultant to the government and industry,
and as a technical expert to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Besides being an active member of the ANS, Podowski
belongs to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers. His work has been published
in such publications as Nuclear Science and Engineering,
Nuclear Engineering and Design, Journal of Heat Transfer,
IEEE Transaction on Automatic Control, and Multiphase
Science and Technology. His main areas of research include
heat transfer and fluid mechanics, system stability, and numerical
simulation of transient and unsteady state two-phase flows.
Podowski will receive his fellowship at an ANS
luncheon Nov. 19 in Washington, D.C.
