Flynn Cochran ’04 Wins National Scholarship
The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame has selected Rensselaer student-athlete Flynn Cochran ’04 to the 2003 National Scholar-Athlete Class. Cochran, a senior wide receiver, is one of just 15 student-athletes from all NCAA divisions (I-A, I-AA, II, III, and NAIA) to be recognized.

"Since 1959, these highly sought after awards have recognized only a chosen few who have excelled above all in the areas of scholarship, citizenship, and athletic performance," said National Football Foundation Chairman Jon F. Hanson. "We are pleased to honor these outstanding young men for all of their achievements with an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship."
An exemplary student and multifaceted player on the football field, Cochran has served as a defensive back, quarterback, running back, punter, punt and kick returner, and currently is one of the top wide receivers in Division III.
A management major, Cochran was a National Academic All-America First Team selection, an All-District 1 First Team honoree, and an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) All-Academic Team member in 2002. A regular Dean's List member and recipient of the RPI Academic Excellence Award, he is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and a member of the Epsilon Delta Sigma Management Honor Society
One of only two Division III student-athletes selected, the Kent, Wash., native has played in five games this season, making 40 catches for 527 yards and seven touchdowns. He currently ranks sixth in the nation in receptions per game (8.0) and 17th in receiving yards per contest (105.4).
To be eligible for the post-graduate fellowship, the nominee must be a senior or graduate student in his final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, have shown superior academic application and performance, have outstanding football ability as a first team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
The scholar-athletes will be recognized at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's 46th Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 9 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Also being honored at the dinner will be the 2003 College Football Hall of Fame class, which will share the dais with these scholar-athletes.
