| EMPACs New York City Debut |

Tonight (Nov. 17), 250 guests will gather for the New York City debut of Rensselaers Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). The event will take place in The Duke, a 200-seat, black-box theater on 42nd Street.
President Shirley Ann Jackson, EMPAC Director Johannes Goebel, and London-based design architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw will offer the New York City arts community, media, and other invited guests a preview of EMPACs building and program that will enable artists from around the world to experience the nexus of research, technology, and the performing arts. Superb conductors of heat and infinitesimal in size, carbon nanotubes might be used to prevent overheating in next-generation computing devices or as fillers to enhance thermal conductivity of insulating materials, such as durable plastics or engine oil. But a Rensselaer research team has discovered that the nanotubes role as thermal superconductors is greatly diminished when mixed with materials such as polymers that make up plastics. More

Rensselaers Lighting Research Center Students Help Transform Historic Monument
At a special Veterans Day evening ceremony, Vermont Governor James Douglas threw the switch to illuminate the historic Bennington Battle Monument for the first time. Approximately 150 spectators cheered as the special energy-efficient lights slowly brightened to their full power, illuminating the states tallest structure with four beams carefully aimed to avoid light pollution, trespass, and wasted light. Providing the research for the new lighting were students from Rensselaers Lighting Research Center. More

Rensselaer Alums Incubator Start-Up Nurtures Undergrads
Eight Rensselaer undergraduates are getting hands-on experience in entrepreneurship at a company in the universitys Incubator Program.
The students work for Agora Studios, a start-up founded and run by Rensselaer alumnus Michael DelPrete 01. The company launched July 1 of this year develops interactive online communities, and employs the eight as interns or on a full- or part-time basis. More
