Wolf W. von Maltzahn, professor of biomedical engineering and associate vice president for research, has been elected president-elect of the national Biomedical Engineering Society (2005). 10/27/03
At an annual dinner of the N.Y. Capital Region Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) Oct. 8, Rensselaer won an AMA Mark of Excellence Award for this springs Accepted Student Enrollment Campaign. Out of a pool of more than 40 applicants and 12 finalists, the Rensselaer team, comprised of staffers from the offices of Enrollment Management and Communications, was one of just six to receive the honor. The AMA recognized the campaignwhich involved acceptance letters, guides, events, a multimedia CD, Web site, streaming video, chat rooms, and a media outreach componentfor the unprecedented results it yielded; this years accepted class not only achieved record highs in the overall number of students (1,394), but also in the number of women (325), legacies (88), and Rensselaer Medalists (315). 10/20/03
Roger Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Engineering and Science at Rensselaer at Hartford, received a Presidential Citation from Toastmasters International in recognition of outstanding achievements. The award is one of Toastmasters highest honors and recognizes contributions to its program of communication and leadership. The award was presented at the 72nd Annual Convention and Hall of Fame Pageant held in Atlanta, Aug. 22. In honoring Brown, Toastmasters International noted, Roger is a committed and dedicated leader, mentoring many district governors in the past 25 years. Roger has held numerous club and district positions, was a Distinguished District governor, and has earned other district awards. He is currently a member of the West Hartford Toastmasters Club and the Greater Hartford Toastmasters Club, which holds its meetings at Rensselaer at Hartford. Brown has 10 years of industrial experience and 21 years experience teaching computer science and computer engineering courses. 10/13/03
Suvranu De, assistant professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, has been invited to be on the editorial board of the Seventh International Conference on Computational Structures Technology to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, in September, 2004. De also has invited to be on the scientific advisory board of the Third MIT Conference on Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics to be held in Cambridge, Mass., in June 2004. 10/13/03
Henry Ehrlich, professor emeritus, has accepted an invitation from Nicola Senesi of the University of Bari, Italy, to join as a member the subcommittee on "Biophysico-chemical processes in environmental systems" of Division VI of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Ehrlich contributed an invited chapter to a recent IUPAC publication (2002) titled "Interactions Between Soil Particles and Microorganisms," edited by P.M. Huang, Canada, J.-M. Bollag, and N. Wayne Gray, professor of cognitive science, was elected chair-elect of the Cognitive Science Society at the Societys 25th Annual Conference held in Boston in August. The election carries a three-year commitment as chair-elect, chair, and past-chair. The Cognitive Science Society is the world's leading professional society for cognitive science. 10/13/03
Michael Halloran, emeritus professor of language, literature, and communications, was named a fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America. 10/13/03
Thiagarajan Ravichandran (Ravi), associate professor of management in Rensselaers Lally School, has been named associate editor of MIS Quarterly, an academic periodical based at the University of Minnesotas Carlson School of Management. A peer reviewed scholarly journal, MIS Quarterly publishes research concerning both the management of information technology and the use of information technology for managerial and organizational purposes, according to its Web site. Ravichandran also serves on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, a research-based, refereed journal in engineering management published by the IEEE Engineering Management Society. 10/13/03
Donald Siegel, professor and chair of economics, has been named to the Scientific Committee for the Applied Econometrics Association Conference on Innovation and Intellectual Property: Economic and Managerial Perspectives at INSEAD-Singapore in July 2004. 10/13/03
Rensselaers Student Chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) has won the Meritorious Achievement Award for 2003. The award was presented at the societys annual meeting in Nashville Oct. 2. According to Natacha DePaola, associate professor of biomedical engineering and faculty adviser to the chapter, Not only will our undergraduate representatives will be there to receive the award, be exposed to the scientific sessions, and interact with other student chapter representatives, we'll also have a good group of graduate students presenting their research work. 10/13/03
