Convocation Celebrates Academic Achievements
"To be counted among
the best at Rensselaer requires commitment to excellence,
perseverance through setbacks, and countless hours of hard
work. We take particular note of those whose achievements
truly are exceptional," President Jackson told the
honorees and guests at Rensselaer's ninth annual Honors
Convocation, held Friday, Nov. 1, in the Alumni Sports and
Recreation Center.

Tito to Speak at Rensselaer Nov. 14
Dennis Tito '64, founder and
president of Wilshire Associates Inc. and inventor of the
Wilshire 5000 index, will participate in the Rensselaer
Alumni Association (RAA) Back-to-Campus Speaker Series Thursday,
Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Heffner Alumni House. More

Nuclear
Future
The looming shortage of a qualified nuclear workforce and
the need to strengthen collaborations between universities,
industry, and government were the subject of a major conference
sponsored by Rensselaer, the Nuclear
Energy Institute, and the U.S.
Department of Energy last week at the Desmond in Albany.
The conference produced a list of recommended actions to
strengthen America's preparedness in research and education.

Attack
A kitchen counter that attacks germs? That's just one possibility
for hybrid materials that combine biological and non-biological
substances. Jonathan Dordick, the Howard P. Isermann '42
Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer, is using
nanotechnology to develop self-cleaning plastics in which
embedded enzymes destroy the ability of pathogens to bind
to a surface. His research is profiled in the November issue
of Technology Review. More

Obituary: Lally
Professor Robert McDonald
Robert McDonald, a clinical assistant
professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology,
died Oct. 29. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel
+ Cultural Center Wednesday, Nov. 6, beginning at 9 a.m.
