Trustee James Mullen '80 to Give Biotech Lecture Nov. 6

Rensselaer Trustee James Mullen '80, president and CEO of Biogen Inc., will deliver a lecture titled "The Forest and the Trees: My Perspective on the Biotechnology Industry," Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Heffner Alumni House.

The second speaker of the 2002-2003 Biotechnology Management and Entrepreneurship Seminar Series, Mullen will discuss the evolution of the field, identify some key areas of opportunity, and offer advice on building a career in the sector.

"Jim Mullen is a leading expert in the biotechnology industry who-with his experience and knowledge — can speak about trends and the future of the field, and then place them in perspective," said Shreefal Mehta, research assistant professor and the series organizer. "Anyone who wants to learn about career development and technology in biotech should definitely attend."

Mullen graduated from Rensselaer in 1980 with degree in chemical engineering. In 1989, he took a position at Biogen, an independent pharmaceutical company. There he rose through the ranks by coordinating the manufacturing and distribution of AVONEX, or Interferon beta-1a, a drug that treats relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.
