James Ferris was an invited speaker at
the Space Research Committee of the World Space Conference in
Houston, Texas, on Oct. 15. Ferris gave a presentation titled
"Catalysis in Prebiotic Chemistry: RNA Synthesis." 10/28/02

John Harrington, dean of the humanities
and social sciences and professor of language, literature and
communication, spoke at Cooper Union in New York City Oct. 15.
Harrington spoke on institutional planning and viability of nonprofits
in performing arts early in the 20th century. 10/28/02

The Center for Initiatives in Pre-College Education
and the Office of Minority Student Affairs have received
$300,000 from the General Electric Fund to help improve teaching
and learning skills in middle school mathematics. The grant is
one of four awarded nationally this year. CIPCE and OMSA will
work with local school districts to develop interactive tutorials.
The tutorials will focus on problem areas in middle-school mathematics
faced by the majority of students. Integrating robotics into the
mathematics curriculum is part of the plan. 10/28/02

Arthur Bergles, Clark and Crossan Professor
of Engineering, Emeritus, received the 2002 International SFT
Award from the French Thermal Society, "for his contribution
to both thermal sciences and international cooperation."
The award, given at the International Heat Transfer Conference
in Grenoble, France, was the only one for North America. 10/21/02

Robert Doremus, the New York State Science
and Technology Foundation Professor of Glass and Ceramics Science
at Rensselaer, received the George Morey Award of the American
Ceramic Society, Glass Division, at its annual meeting Oct. 14-16.
Doremus gave a lecture on "Viscosity of Silicate Glasses"
that was attended by approximately 150 people. 10/21/02
