Heads Up! IED Students to Present Final Projects
Dec. 6
Bouncing and flying balls will abound as students
present their final projects in Introduction to Engineering
Design (IED) on Friday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Great
Hall of the Darrin Communications Center.
This year's project will enable students
to "develop a science of how to describe how balls move
so we can build new toys."

The entire campus is invited to attend.
IED is a sophomore-level engineering design
class in which students are assigned a theme to guide their creativity.
This semester, the students were challenged to design and build
a "Ball Testing Machine" that improves the understanding
of ball motion.
Course coordinator Bill Foley hopes that this
year's project will enable students to "develop a science
of how to describe how balls move so we can build new toys."
Foley says the probable outcome of the work will include simulators
for computer programs.
This year's IED class includes 11 sections, with
each section building one complete ball-testing machine. Approximately
70 teams will showcase their projects.
