Wayne Gray, professor of cognitive sciences, spoke in September at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio on "Soft Constraints on Interactive Behavior: Perspective, Recent Research and Future Directions." 11/11/02

William Luddy Jr., clinical professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, has received two new appointments to the American Bar Association (ABA). The ABA's Section of Science and Technology Law named Luddy as one of four members to its new International Policy Coordinating Council. Additionally, Luddy was named vice chair of the Science and Technology Section's Computer Law Division. The International Policy Coordinating Council serves as the primary link between the Section of Science & Technology Law and international policymakers. 11/11/02

Carl McDaniel, professor of biology, delivered the keynote address at the 107th annual conference and meeting of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) Nov. 3-5. McDaniel's address was titled "Hopefulness in a Time of Peril." 11/11/02

James Ferris was an invited speaker at the Space Research Committee of the World Space Conference in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 15. Ferris gave a presentation titled "Catalysis in Prebiotic Chemistry: RNA Synthesis." 10/28/02

John Harrington, dean of the humanities and social sciences and professor of language, literature and communication, spoke at Cooper Union in New York City Oct. 15. Harrington spoke on institutional planning and viability of nonprofits in performing arts early in the 20th century. 10/28/02

The Center for Initiatives in Pre-College Education and the Office of Minority Student Affairs have received $300,000 from the General Electric Fund to help improve teaching and learning skills in middle school mathematics. The grant is one of four awarded nationally this year. CIPCE and OMSA will work with local school districts to develop interactive tutorials. The tutorials will focus on problem areas in middle-school mathematics faced by the majority of students. Integrating robotics into the mathematics curriculum is part of the plan. 10/28/02
