Faye
Duchin, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
and professor of economics, delivered a plenary lecture about
a global perspective on the challenges faced by regional economies
at the community forum, "Learning Sustainability: Achieving
Environmental, Economic and Social Well-Being," Oct. 10-12,
in Buffalo. The event was organized by the University at Buffalo
in collaboration with various community partners and is intended
to launch a long-term discussion about a sustainable path for
Buffalo and the region through the 21st century. 10/29/01

"Bud" Peterson, provost, is being honored by ASME
International (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) with
its Heat Transfer Memorial Award. Peterson is being recognized
for outstanding contributions in the area of phase-change heat
transfer and pioneering investigations of microscale heat pipes.
The award will be presented to Peterson during the 2001 International
Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition Nov. 11-16 in New

Holmes, chair and professor of mathematical sciences, has
been appointed to the Board of Executive Associate Editors for
the Journal of Engineering Mathematics. 10/22/01
Lester
Gerhardt, associate dean of engineering, was the honored guest
and keynote speaker at the International Conference on Concurrent
Engineering: Research and Applications, in Anaheim in July. He
spoke on the future directions of concurrent engineering. Gerhardt
also was a keynote speaker at the European Society of Engineering
Education in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September. The title of his
address was "The Changing Paradigm of Global Engineering
Education."
Gerhardt
and Deborah Kaminski, associate professor of mechanical,
aerospace, and nuclear engineering, presented a paper titled "Engineering
Entrepreneurship at Rensselaer" at the First International
Colloquium sponsored by ASEE and SEFI, Sept. 15-18 in Berlin,
