Frances BronetFrances Bronet, associate professor of architecture, has been chosen as the 2001 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching New York Professor of the Year. The award, part of the U.S. Professor of the Year Program, honors the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country who excel as teachers and influence the lives and careers of their students. Researchers Study Unusual Bacteria

A rare group of microorganisms, which thrive in a harsh, sulfidic, oxygen-poor environment, was known to exist only in New Zealand. But Rensselaer researchers have found the same bacteria in the United States and may have found extensive amounts of it in several hot springs in the Philippines. More

WMHT Breaks Ground at Tech Park for New Digital Broadcast Center

WMHT broke ground for its new digital public broadcast center at the Rensselaer Technology Park on Nov.13. President Jackson, Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, and Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino joined top officials from public broadcasting in welcoming the station to its new home. More

Researchers Study Vulnerabilities at Ground Zero
A community's critical infrastructures—communications, transportation, water, electric power systems—are a challenge to run smoothly even on the best days. In the wake of Sept. 11, researchers at Rensselaer are studying how interdependent these systems are and how systems operators handled the disruptions. The goal of the study is to provide computer tools to aid in future potential disasters. More

Smart Parking
Searching for a parking spot could soon be a thing of the past. A student startup, ImagenAR, is developing wireless "smart" parking technology that can instantly provide the location of available spots, making parking quicker and easier. More

Telling It With a Smile
While it's fun to sprinkle emoticons such as smiles :-) frowns :-( and winks ;-) throughout e-mail messages, they are neither a surrogate for clear writing, nor an enhancement for electronic communication, says Joseph Walther, professor of computer mediated communication at Rensselaer. More
