Events
Researchers
are developing novel computational techniques that could lead
to better simulation of complex systems, such as the spread
of diseases, the evolution of financial markets, and the flow
of Internet traffic. With a $450,000 grant from the National
Science Foundation, Gyorgy Korniss, assistant professor of
physics, will use a computational technique called Parallel
Discrete-Event Simulation to model large-scale systems, where
events occur randomly in space and time. More

Flexible
Engineering Center Formed
The School of Engineering has formed the Flexible Manufacturing
Center (FMC) under the leadership of Stephen Derby '76,
associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear
engineering, and Raymond Puffer, who most recently served
as associate director of the Center for Automation Technologies.

100 Years
A number of events have been planned in celebration of the
100th anniversary of Rensselaer ice hockey, including a
raffle for the "Rensselaer Ultimate Hockey Fan"
package that includes a commemorative game jersey, signed
hockey stick, Rensselaer baseball cap, and two season tickets
to the 2002-2003 season. More

Alum Bequeaths $5
Million; New Theater To Bear His Name
David Goodman '39 has bequeathed $5 million to Rensselaer's
unrestricted endowment. In honor of his gift, the electronic
media and performing arts center's elaborate, 1,200-seat
theater will bear his name. More

Nicholas Humber '63 Killed Sept. 11 Nicholas Humber '63, of
Newton, Mass., an executive of Enron Wind Corporation, was
a passenger aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed
into the World Trade Center Sept. 11. More
