Alum Bequeaths $5 Million; New Theater To Bear His Name

David Goodman bequeaths $5 millionDavid Goodman '39 has bequeathed
$5 million to Rensselaer's unrestricted endowment. In honor of his gift, the electronic media and performing arts center's elaborate, 1,200-seat theater will bear his name.

Goodman, who died in May, met with President Jackson in summer of 2000. At that time, he learned about the proposed arts center—a showcase for Rensselaer's signature offerings in the electronic arts.

Goodman, who graduated from Rensselaer with a degree in industrial engineering, established Recorded Publications Manufacturing Company in 1948. Over the years, the company expanded from audiocassettes to videocassettes to computer software.

Goodman was an active Rensselaer Patroon, a member of the Rensselaer Council and the School of Management Board of Overseers, and Reunion Gift chairman for the Class of 1939.

Plans for Rensselaer's arts center are moving ahead. London-based architects Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners (and their New York subsidiary, NPGUSA) are working on design, and an active search for artistic director is in full swing. Rensselaer faculty and consultants are developing the program, with an emphasis on residencies by visiting performing artists and artists with a focus on electronic media.

Resident artists will conduct performances in the Goodman Theater, engage in research, and interact with students, faculty, and members of the surrounding communities.
