Accolades: November 12, 2001
Lisa Simpson, associate director
of financial aid, was awarded a new service award at the
recent New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association
meeting. The award, Sister Bernadine Hayes Rusty Hopkins
Service Award, recognizes significant contributions women
have made to the association. Simpson is the first recipient
of this award. 11/12/01

Howard Brandston, adjunct professor
of architecture, has won a Lifetime Achievement Award from
the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD).
In announcing the award, the IALD board of directors praised
Brandston's work in a 30-year career as a lighting designer
and his contribution to elevating the profession of lighting
design. The award will be presented at the IALD annual meeting
Nov. 28-29 in Philadelphia. 11/12/01

Research by several Rensselaer faculty members
was presented at the 113th annual meeting of the Geological
Society of America, held in Boston Nov. 1-10. Approximately
6,000 geoscientists from around the world were expected
to attend. Bruce Watson, Institute Professor of Science,
graduate student Rinat Gabitov, earth and environmental
sciences (E&ES), and Jonathan Price, director
of teaching and facilities in E&ES, presented preliminary
results of a study on "Flourite Solubility and Diffusivity
in Haplogranitic Melt"; Danielle Cherniak, research
associate professor in E&ES, discussed "Rare Earth
Elements Diffusion in Feldspar"; Cherniak and Watson
together with graduate student X.Y. Zhang gave "Preliminary
Experimental Results for Oxygen Diffusion in Titanite Under
Anhydrous Conditions"; David Wark, research
associate professor in E&ES, and Rob McCaffrey, professor
of earth and environmental sciences, presented "Evolution
of the Toba Caldera Complex in a Restraining Bend of the
Great Sumatra Fault"; and Watson presented on "Aspects
of Fluid/Rock Microstructure That Might Affect Rock Rheology:
An Experimentalist's Historical Perspective."
