Igor Vamos Wins Prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship

Igor Vamos  

Igor Vamos, internationally known multimedia artist and assistant professor of integrated electronic arts at Rensselaer, has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

The Guggenheim, a highly competitive and prestigious fellowship is awarded for outstanding achievement and exceptional promise in a discipline. Vamos was chosen from more than 3,000 applicants. More

Rensselaer Awarded State Funding for Alcohol/Substance Abuse Education

Rensselaer has received $10,000 from the New York State Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) toward the university’s continuing efforts to prevent alcohol abuse on campus and in the surrounding community. The OASAS award is part of the state’s Healthy Campus Community Demonstration Project. Funds are provided through the Federal “Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws” block grant. More

Public Safety Bike Training

Public Safety officers took part in bike patrol training on April 25, conducted by Officer Jim Bottillo of Troy’s Community Policing program. The training included several drills requiring the participants to demonstrate command of the bike, including a 32-mile ride testing the participants’ skills shifting the bike, handling tough inclines and declines, and overall physical conditioning. Net Results: IED Students Show Off “Ping Pong Robots” April 30

About 260 students enrolled in Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) displayed their final projects for the semester, “Ping Pong Robots,” on April 30 in the Alumni Sports and Recreation Center.

Twenty teams of IED students were challenged to develop robots that can play table tennis against a human, said IED course coordinator Bill Foley. The robots must simulate all levels of ping-pong from beginner to expert, receive and return volleys, vary shots during a game, and “decide” where to redirect lobs on the game table. More
