Commencement Colloquy May 16

As part of Commencement 2003, the President’s Office is hosting a discussion among the honorary degree recipients on Friday, May 16, at 5 to 6:30 pm. in the Heffner Alumni House. The campus community is invited.

The participants are: Donna Shalala, former U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services, who will receive an honorary doctorate of laws; Morris “Marty” Silverman, a well-known local philanthropist, who will receive an honorary doctorate of laws; Richard Smalley, the Hackerman Professor of Chemistry at Rice University and 1996 Nobel laureate; who will receive an honorary doctorate of science; and Robert Solow, professor emeritus of economics at MIT and 1987 Nobel laureate, who will receive an honorary doctorate of laws.

Human Resources "Brown Bag" Info Session May 8

Human Resources will host a brown bag lunch session on Thursday, May 8, at noon in the Heffner Alumni House. The topic of discussion is the “HR Policy & Procedure Manual.” The discussion will include a review of the format of the manual, campus distribution plan, the methods of communicating the policy updates, and a description of the education sessions planned for supervisors to attend. If you’d like to register to attend, contact Beverly Pruitt at pruitb@rpi.edu to reserve a space no later than May 5. 5/5/03

Sports Camp Winners Announced

The athletics department recently held a drawing for a free week of camp for boys and girls ages 7-13 at the 2003 RPI Instructional All Sports Camp. The two winners were Megan Galbraith in the Office of Communications and Leanne Hanlon in the Department of Public Safety. Teaching and Learning Colloquium Keynote Speakers Announced

The third annual Teaching and Learning Colloquium, scheduled for May 12 and 13, will feature two well-known academics as keynote speakers.

Eric Mazur, professor of physics at Harvard University, will speak on “Understanding or Memorization: Are We Teaching the Right Thing?” Mazur holds a triple appointment as Harvard College Professor, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics, and Professor of Physics at Harvard University. An internationally recognized teacher and scientist, he leads a research program in physics education as well as in optical physics. In 2001, he was honored with one of the first National Science Foundation (NSF) Director's Distinguished Teaching Scholar awards, the highest distinction conferred by the NSF.

Diane Ebert-May, professor of biology at Michigan State University, will discuss “Assessment of Student Learning.” Ebert-May has been a leader in the ongoing effort to improve education in the biological and environmental sciences. She is director of FIRST II, a National Dissemination Project funded by the NSF to provide opportunities for faculty and future faculty throughout the country to improve their teaching of science.
