Academy Hall Parking Lot Advisory

Effective Tuesday, May 27, construction on the Academy Hall parking lot will impact automobile and pedestrian access as follows: To accommodate construction, the Academy Hall parking lot will be divided in half and allow parking for approximately 50 cars.

Additional parking will be available in North Lot, AS&RC Lot, or any residence hall lot. Automobiles will be able to access the lot from directly behind Academy Hall and there will be no pedestrian access from Academy Hall to the main campus.

Ongoing work will include construction of new gates and associated work; final grading, paving, and striping; new catch basins and storm lines; new lighting and conduits; new pedestrian path and security work; and, all sidewalk related work on College Avenue.

Construction activity also will limit access to the pedestrian paths from the west side of the lot in the area to the north and east of Cogswell. This work will include installation of new ductbank, sewer, chilled water lines, steam and condensate lines that cross through the area near the existing sub-station and the pedestrian crossing. The lots to the east of Cogswell will continue to be staging areas or will be excavated through the summer. Workers will be actively digging up the east end of the research quad. Both of those areas will be closed to pedestrians but there will be access to the ADA parking area in the research quad. Pedestrians will not be able to cross into the construction activity.

According to Allison Newman, director of community relations, these projects have been timed for the summer months to minimize impact. Work should be complete and the lot returned to full capacity in time for the fall semester. For more on campus construction projects, go to http://www.rpi.edu/dept/gov/construct/index.html. 5/19/03

Annual Electrical Shutdowns Academic Campus May 20-21

Each year at this time the Campus Planning Electrical Engineer and the Physical Plant Electrical Shop transfer power from the main electrical feed at the campus substation to the alternate electrical feed, to ensure that the transfer switch is in proper working order in case of an emergency. In addition, other high-voltage equipment in the substation and selected other buildings is inspected and cleaned.

Electrical service will be interrupted on Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. After 4 p.m. all air conditioning will be shut down until 11 p.m. All electrical power will be shut down at the academic buildings and the Black Cultural Center, Blaw Knox buildings, Boiler House, E Dorms, H Building, J Building, North Hall, Service Building, Quad Dorms, Rensselaer Union, and Sage Dining Hall.

After the shutdown periods, the Physical Plant Electrical Shop will continue their work on the high-voltage equipment until 11 p.m. each night. While this work has been performed in the past without incident, there is no guarantee that there will not be an interruption in power. To be safe, shut down any equipment that is sensitive to loss of electrical power, such as computers.
If you have any questions concerning your building please call Rich Hornberger at ext. 6401 or hornbr@rpi.edu. 5/12/03
