Amri Abdul-Karim, a graduate student in computer and systems engineering who does work in the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS), has won the 2003 Presidential Student Award from the Microscopy Society of America for his work on quantifying changes in tumor vasculature from multi-photon 3-D image series in collaboration with MGH/Harvard. According to Badri Roysam, director of CenSSIS, “This project is a beautiful example of what can happen when the finest engineers, biologists, biochemists, and biophysicists come together and harmonize their tools and talents in service of an important societal need.” 5/5/03
Merritt Abrash, professor emeritus of cultural study, has published a book titled Mindful of Utopia (1stBooks Library), “a futuristic tale of a man thrown headfirst into a parallel world that is both ideal and disconcerting.” Abrash taught the course Utopia in Theory and Practice at Rensselaer for many years. In 1976 he initiated the Society for Utopian Studies, which has become the leading scholarly organization in the field. 5/5/03
Audrey Bennett, assistant professor of language, literature, and communication, was principal investigator, along with Mukkai Krishnamoorthy, associate professor of computer science, and Ron Eglash, assistant professor of science and technology studies, co-principal investigators, on a $50,000 Rensselaer seed grant for "A Virtual Design Studio Pilot Project: Facilitating the Participatory Design of an AIDS/HIV Awareness Campaign With a Remote Audience in Kenya." 5/5/03
Cheryl Geisler, professor of language, literature, and communication, will serve as an expert reviewer for the Swedish Council for Renewal of Higher Education, funded by the Swedish Parliament, to support innovative projects to enhance teaching and learning in undergraduate and postgraduate education. She also served as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation's Program on the Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science, and Technology. 5/5/03
Edward Gorcenski, a junior in aeronautical and mechanical engineering, has received a summer undergraduate research fellowship from the Department of Energy for a 10-week term at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, at Princeton University in New Jersey. The session will culminate in a student research paper published in a Department of Energy journal. Gorcenski will be doing research in nuclear fusion. 5/5/03
John Harrington, dean of humanities and social sciences, was named to the Executive International Committee of Irish Theatrical Diaspora, an ongoing scholarly organization that is planning the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, in 2004. 5/5/03
Donald Siegel, chair of economics, has been named an associate editor (Board of Editors) of the Journal of Productivity Analysis, and will serve on a National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Committee on "Data to Assess the Current and Evolving Structure of the U.S. Research and Development Enterprise." 5/5/03
Langdon Winner, professor of science and technology studies, was invited to testify on "The Social Implications of Nanotechnology" before the Committee on Science of the House of Representatives, chaired by Rep. Sherwood L. Boehlert (R-Utica), on April 9. 5/5/03
