Multimedia Dance Performance May 25

The Rensselaer community and general public are invited to see the first public performance of the "Ava Project," a first-of-its kind multimedia dance performance headed by Rensselaer digital artist Kathleen Ruiz in a collaboration with professional dancers, a visual artist, and electronic sound composers.

The performance will take place on Saturday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River St., Troy. Tickets are $12 for general audience, $8 for seniors, students, and children 12 and under.

"Ava" is a colorful, animated female figure with human-like movements that are
projected onto a stage filled with interactive electronic sound embedded into sculptures. Two dancers also will be on stage. The dancers' movement is "motion captured" through body sensors. Radio waves relay those movements into Ava's virtual body to create the animations for projection. The animated Ava then becomes a virtual dancing partner.

The "Ava Project" explores the delicate relationship between humanity, technology, and creativity, says Ruiz, assistant professor of arts at Rensselaer. "Like technology itself, Ava becomes a compelling figment capable of transforming our imagination," Ruiz says.

The Ava Project has been featued in Wired magazine.

For more information, contact the Arts Center at 273-0552.

Cisco Certified Network Associate Program To Be Offered at Hartford
Rensselaer and the Rensselaer Learning Institute (at the Hartford campus) are collaborating in a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Boot Camp Program for working professionals. The program will be offered over five days during a split session, June 3-5 and 13-14, on the Rensselaer at Hartford campus.

The CCNA program has already been given at the Troy campus and produced more than 80 certified professionals. David Kotfila, Rensselaer's Cisco Academy director and a Cisco-certified network professional, developed the dynamic, hands-on course for undergraduate students and is now offering it to working professionals in the Hartford area. 4/29/02
