Commencement 2002At its 196th Commencement on Saturday, May 18, Rensselaer is expected to confer 1,039 bachelor's degrees, 970 master's degrees, and 82 doctoral degrees. The Institute also will bestow an honorary doctoral degree on civilian space traveler and successful businessman Dennis Tito '64, who will deliver the Commencement address. Hollywood moviemaker Bobby Farrelly '81, Claire Fraser '77, director of The Institute for Genomics Research, and Brown University President Ruth Simmons also will receive honorary doctorates. More

Permanent Injury Does Not Deter Student
Stephen Horne's life changed forever one summer day in 1995 just before his sophomore year in high school. On his way to a canoeing trip in Maine with 10 other friends, the driver fell asleep at the wheel, Horne suffered a broken back—two exploded vertebrae—and a severe concussion. His doctors told him he probably never would walk again. But Horne will walk across stage on May 18 to collect his degree from Rensselaer. More

A Busload of North Carolina Relatives To Attend Graduation
When Jelani Cowan '02 asked for 35 Commencement tickets, and even more if he could get them, a Rensselaer representative questioned why he needed so many. Cowan explained that a full busload of his relatives plan to attend his graduation. More

Senior Gift Makes a Splash!
The senior class has traditionally presented the Institute with a gift. Past bequests have included a clock, a time capsule, the granite "Rensselaer" sign on the lawn of the Student Union, and the formation of a scholarship fund. This year, the Class of 2002 has given $2,500 toward the cost of wooden cabinetry to support a new 330-gallon saltwater aquarium in the north lobby of the Student Union. More

Preliminary results indicate that, despite the economic downturn, Rensselaer students — most notably those majoring in management, computer science, and information technology — are still getting good jobs. More

Albany Molecular Funds Post-Doc Position; Establishes Fund in Honor of Art Schultz
Albany Molecular Research Inc. (Nasdaq: AMRI), located in the Rensselaer Technology Park, has awarded a total of $100,000 to fund a post-doctoral research associate in the chemistry departments of Rensselaer and the University at Albany. More
