A Busload of North Carolina Relatives
To Attend Graduation
When Jelani Cowan '02 asked for 35 Commencement
tickets, and even more if he could get them, a Rensselaer
representative questioned why he needed so many. Cowan explained
that a full busload of his relatives plan to attend his
graduation.

"I am very happy to hear that
so many relatives will be sharing in my accomplishments
says Cowan, who will be the first grandchild of about
20 from the family to graduate from college. "This
graduation will not only celebrate my individual accomplishments
but that of an entire family."

Cowan couldn't be more literal. Dozens of
his relatives from North Carolina have chartered a bus to
see their beloved relative cross the stage at Rensselaer
to collect his diploma on Saturday, May 18. On Sunday, the
busload of great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, sisters,
brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins will then head to Colgate
University, where they will watch Cowan's cousin, Lamar
Datcher, also graduate.
"I am very happy to hear that so many
relatives will be sharing in my accomplishments," says
Cowan, who will be the first grandchild of about 20 from
the family to graduate from college. "This graduation
will not only celebrate my individual accomplishments but
that of an entire family."
Cowan will receive his bachelor's degree
in information technology with an emphasis on finance. Originally
from Kannapolis, N.C., he moved to Albany when he was in
fourth grade and is a graduate of Christian Brother's Academy.
Cowan has accepted a job as a wireless connectivity
analyst at Texas Instruments. He also plans to further his
education and has already been accepted to the University
of Texas at Austin's MBA program as well as Rensselaer's
M.S. in New Product Development program.
