Groundbreaking for Biotechnology Center Scheduled for May 17
Groundbreaking for the new Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies will take place Friday, May 17, at noon in the George M. Low Center parking lot. All are encouraged to attend.

Government officials, legislative leaders, trustees, and alumni are expected to take part in the ceremony. The featured speaker will be Anthony Tether '64, director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Washington, D.C. Congressman Michael McNulty, New York State Senator Joseph Bruno, and Troy Mayor Mark Pattison are expected to attend.

The biotechnology center will provide state-of-the-art facilities to house constellations of faculty, junior faculty, and others who will conduct research in functional tissue engineering, integrative systems biology, biocomputation and bioinformatics, and biocatalysis and metabolic engineering. The building will house 60 faculty members and more than 300 researchers and graduate students. The facility is expected to open in 2004. 5/13/02

Reception for Honorary Degree Recipients
As part of Commencement weekend, President Jackson has invited the campus to a reception in honor of the 2002 Commencement honorary degree recipients. The reception will be Friday, May 17, at 5 to 6 p.m. in a tent located behind the Heffner Alumni House.

Rensselaer will bestow honorary degrees on filmmaker Bobby Farrelly '81, genome scientist Claire Fraser '77, Brown University President Ruth Simmons, and civilian space traveler and successful businessman Dennis Tito '64, who will be the featured speaker at Commencement. South Campus Development Projects Public Information Meeting May 28
A public information meeting regarding the South Campus Development Projects will be held Tuesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Heffner Alumni House, lower level. The meeting, which will be held monthly, will include project news and updates on progress to date. The campus and local community is encouraged to attend.

Graduating Students Invited to Regional Open House
Students graduating from Rensselaer are invited to the fourth annual Regional Open House and Comedy Night on Monday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m. in the Heffner Alumni House. At the event, students can meet alumni from across the country who will share information about their local communities.

In addition, there will be representatives from campus departments including the Career Development Center, Alumni Relations, Professional & Distance Education, and Graduate Admissions.

Students will be able to sign up for alumni services such as RenSource (a searchable alumni database for career mentoring and job opportunities) and E-mail for Life (a free, full-service e-mail address available through any Web browser).

Runners, Walkers Sought for Corporate Challenge
Rensselaer's full-time employees are invited to participate in the 2002 Corporate Challenge Race on Thursday, May 23, beginning at 6:25 p.m. in downtown Albany. The challenge, over a 3.5-mile course, is one of the largest participatory corporate sporting events in the United States. Runners and walkers will compete as part of a corporate team.

Rensselaer's teams have a history of success in the challenge. The women's team captured first in 1997, second in 1998 and 1999, and third in 2000.

Even if you cannot run or walk, consider coming out to cheer on the team. Contact Keith Martens, purchasing agent, at martek@rpi.edu or ext. 8692 to have a registration form faxed to you. You must register by Wednesday, May 8. 5/6/02

Commencement Rehearsals May 15; Make Picnic Reservations Online
Graduating students are urged to attend rehearsal for Commencement 2002. Two sessions will be held on Wednesday, May 15, in Room 308 of the Darrin Communications Center. Session I, aimed specifically at students graduating with bachelor's degrees, is at 1 p.m. Session II is at 2:30 p.m. and is for master's and doctoral graduates, and those bachelor's students who cannot attend Session I.

Commencement will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday, May 18, on Harkness Field. Festive Celebration Picnics immediately following the ceremony will be held at various sites around the main campus. Cisco Certified Network Associate Program To Be Offered at Hartford
Rensselaer and the Rensselaer Learning Institute (at the Hartford campus) are collaborating in a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Boot Camp Program for working professionals. The program will be offered over five days during a split session, June 3-5 and 13-14, on the Rensselaer at Hartford campus.

The CCNA program has already been given at the Troy campus and produced more than 80 certified professionals. David Kotfila, Rensselaer's Cisco Academy director and a Cisco-certified network professional, developed the dynamic, hands-on course for undergraduate students and is now offering it to working professionals in the Hartford area. 4/29/02
