Groundbreaking for the new $88 million Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies will take place Friday, May 17, at noon on the south side of the Rensselaer campus in the George M. Low Center parking lot. All are welcome to attend. More

Archeological Dig Begins to Unearth 19th Century History at Rensselaer
Archeologists have begun digging for history on the south side of campus in the parking lots located behind Cogswell Lab, adjacent to College Avenue. More

Scientists Produce Long, Hair-Like Nanotubes
For the first time, researchers have created a simplified method for making long, continuous, hair-like strands of carbon nanotubes that are as long as eight inches. This breakthrough, reported in the May 3 issue of Science, is a first step toward creating such products as microcables for electrical devices or mechanically robust electrochemical actuators for artificial muscles. More

A home elevator can cost upward of $20,000, which is a steep price for a person who might need one to maintain an independent lifestyle. Students in Rensselaer's O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory have built a solution: a home elevator that will cost thousands less than devices currently on the market. More

Rensselaer Named to Hudson River Task Force
Rensselaer has been named to a task force created recently by Governor George Pataki to review issues related to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) plan to remove PCBs from the river and make recommendations on specific aspects of the cleanup. The Hudson River Task Force will allow state officials to discuss critical issues with local communities, share information, and help the state convey its concerns and views to EPA. More

MDL Hold Open House: Haas Technical Center Dedicated
The O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory (MDL) hosted an open house on April 30 that included displays and demonstrations of student projects and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the Haas Technical Center. More

2002 Business Plan Competition Award Winners
The Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship has announced the winners of the 2002 Business Plan Competition. The competition honored the top three winners in the Open Competition and in the Student Competition, who were awarded $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000, respectively. In addition, the first-place winners of the Student Competition are eligible for $20,000 more in "prime-the-pump" capital and the first place-winners of the Open Competition have the opportunity to present to a group of angel investors and venture capitalists in Boston. More
